Pica Pica - Magpie

A member of the crow family this black and white appearing bird is not really black but beautiful shades of metalic green, blue and black. A common visitor to the garden occassionally feeding on the peanuts or suet. A group of magpies is called a marriage. Usual wing span is 19-20cm.



The Magpie will eat young birds and eggs along with small mammals, insects, acorns, grains and seeds. It usually nests high in tall trees but if no tall trees are available in the area they will use bushes and hedges.

Five to eight eggs are in a normal clutch but occassionally ten have been noted. The eggs are relitivly small for such a large bird and are usually blue green with brown and grey spots close together however the blue green colour is variable.
