Similar to Eristalis pertinax and Eristalis similis. The main differences between these are that Eristalis tenax has a wide black facial stripe and does not have yellow front tarsus (lower front leg). It is often reffered to as the drone fly. This is due to its close resemblance to the drone(male) hive bee in both it's appearance and the way it often flies with its legs lowered.
